Tom Correia escreve-fotografa a partir do movimento e de um permanente estado de inquietação. Além dos deslocamentos, sua prática envolve observação e recusa ao previsível, averiguando presença e ausência, mas sempre atento ao inusitado que se revela no caminho. Para ele, fotografar suspende a urgência do ato de escrever e nem todo percurso tem substância para se tornar ficção. Às vezes, a fotografia interrompe a escrita; em outras, a escrita desloca o olhar sobre uma imagem. Ambas preservam a autonomia.

Seus contos são especialmente marcados por indivíduos inadequados, às voltas com o fracasso íntimo e uma violência cotidiana que dialoga com o absurdo. Seus protagonistas ocupam zonas de tensão que oscilam entre o desejo e a frustração, o sarcasmo e a melancolia, a banalidade e o abismo existencial. O conjunto de sua obra explora a ambientação urbana, muitas vezes transformando as ruas e becos da periferia soteropolitana em território ficcional e personagem.

Apesar de sua trajetória ser marcada por constante circulação, Salvador, seu cais afetivo de origem e de retorno, permanece como base de imaginação e memória. As residências de que participa são espaços para descoberta e experimentação. No Instituto Sacatar, na Ilha de Itaparica, ocorreu a convergência entre literatura e fotografia que nortearia seus trabalhos posteriores; no Hangar Centro de Investigação Artística, desenvolveu um projeto sobre a invisibilidade da pessoa negra na fotografia portuguesa; na Library of Africa and of the African Diaspora [LOATAD], em Acra, escreveu sobre sua experiência literário-fotográfica no ensaio A luz que nunca deveria nos faltar.

Em 2026, foi o primeiro autor brasileiro selecionado pelo programa de residência Praga Cidade da Literatura UNESCO. Na ocasião, elaborou um projeto híbrido: Double Czech, uma série de imagens sobrepostas surgida de caminhadas imersivas, e Covil de elefante, que reúne minicontos a partir das suas incursões pela capital tcheca.

Nascido em Salvador, Tom Correia tem formação em Jornalismo e iniciou sua produção literária em 2002, com Memorial dos medíocres, vencedor do Prêmio para Autores Inéditos da Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado. Publicou Sob um céu de gris profundo [2011], Ladeiras, vielas & farrapos [2015], UnBlack Lisbon [2020] e Clube dos niilistas [2021], semifinalista do Prêmio Oceanos.

Tom Correia writes-shoots from a place of movement and a constant state of restlessness. In addition to displacement, their practice involves observation and a rejection of the predictable, investigating presence and absence but always attentive to the unexpected that reveals itself along the way. For him, photography suspends the urgency of the act of writing and not every journey has the substance to transform into fiction. Sometimes, photography interrupts the writing; at other times, writing shifts the way an image is viewed. Both maintain their autonomy.

His short stories are particularly defined by misfits grappling with personal failure and an everyday violence that engages with the absurd. His protagonists inhabit zones of tension that oscillate between desire and frustration, sarcasm and melancholy, banality and the existential abyss. His body of work is rooted in urban settings, often transforming the streets and alleys of Salvador’s outskirts into both fictional territory and a character in its own right.

Despite its trajectory being marked by constant circulation, Salvador, its emotional pier of origin and return, remains a base of imagination and memory. The residencies in which he participates are spaces for discovery and experimentation. It was at the Sacatar Institute on Itaparica Island that the convergence of literature and photography, which would guide his later work, took place. At the Hangar Artistic Research Center, he developed a project about the invisibility of Black people in Portuguese photography. Meanwhile, at the Library of Africa and the African Diaspora [LOATAD] in Accra, he wrote about his literary-photographic experience in the essay The Light That Should Never Fail Us.

In 2026, he was the first Brazilian author selected by the Prague UNESCO City of Literature residency program. At the time, he created a hybrid project: Double Czech, a series of overlapping images arising from immersive walks, and Elephant's Lair, which brings together mini-stories based on his forays through the Czech capital.
